Why Lenovo G40-45 offers the most bang for your buck

Why Lenovo G40-45 offers the most bang for your buck

Looking for a budget-friendly laptop is not an easy task. Especially one that packs enough punch to top off your daily tasks.

Interestingly, the Lenovo G40 series, which is famous for its affordable prices, is powered by AMD A8 processors; a mobile quad-core system-on-chip (SoC) that integrates a Radeon R5 GPU.

What does that mean for average users? The SoC, for instance, has a low power consumption that is rated at 15 watts. But in terms of performance, the clock speed of each core could go up to 2.4GHz from 2GHz when boost is enabled; this not only gives enough performance when needed, but also maintains a low-energy usage when idle. Since it is also equipped with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, you don't have to worry about multitasking while using this laptop.

Longer battery life is achievable thanks to its four-cell battery. Even when you forget to bring your laptop adapter, you can get three hours easily with moderate use. Also, with a 14-inch display, working on a spreadsheet or writing a blog at a cafe will be a breeze.

Another feature that means this laptop gives more than what you pay for is the availability of an optical drive. That means, whenever you want, you can watch or burn DVDs right from your laptop; no need to buy an additional portable optical drive that tends to go missing or gets left behind whenever you travel.

Even with an approximately US$500 price tag, the Lenovo G40-45 still has whatever you need in terms of ports: HDMI and VGA to use with projectors or secondary monitors, LAN and wireless LAN to connect to the internet, and two USB 2.0 ports for additional peripherals. For high-speed data transfer from or to your portable drive, there is also a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed.

For those interested in numbers for benchmarks, here are the results; for PCMark 8, it gets 2589 for Home Accelerated, 3247 for Work Accelerated, and 2499 for Creative Accelerated. Those numbers prove that this laptop is great for daily activities.

Another result is from 3DMark that grades the performance for gaming usage. On Cloud Gate mode, the number is 3690 which is claimed as better than 24 percent of other laptops that have been tested. Another mode was actually intended for higher-end gaming laptops, so the score isn't that great. But overall, most games will work okay, even though some games will require the low or mid resolution settings.

Having a DVD writer on board means that you will be able to make your own home movies. For this purpose, Cinebench R15 was used to test the performance; and the result is great with 165 points for CPU Multi 64Bit and 49 points for CPU Single 64Bit.

Other features that have become standard in modern laptops are also available; an integrated 720p HD webcam and multi-card reader are there.

In conclusion, if you're looking for a great laptop at a great price, this is one that should be taken into consideration.
