Atma Jaya Catholic University (Unika Atma Jaya) recently unveiled its third and newest campus in BSD City, South Tangerang.

The campus is being built on 20 hectares of land, which is a significant upgrade from the 4.2 ha of Unika Atma Jaya's Pluit campus in North Jakarta and the 3.6 ha of its Semanggi campus in South Jakarta.

The first phase of development for this BSD City campus encompasses 3.5 out of the 20 ha of land owned by Unika Atma Jaya. During the first phase, campus officials have built a central building eight floors high, with an additional floor serving as a basement.

These floors include space for labs, classrooms, prayer areas, multi-use rooms, sports centers and canteens. This first phase can accommodate up to 3,500 students.

It is estimated that the entire campus will take five to 10 years to complete, upon which it will be able to accommodate 12,000 students.

This new campus, which held its officiation ceremony on July 25, has been designed from the ground up to be a "center for human development" that is an ideal environment for learning.

"At this campus, our main commitment is to develop and shape the character of our students. We prepare them with international-level skills and give them a caring and distinctly Indonesian character," said A. Prasetyantoko, rector of Unika Atma Jaya.

The campus focuses on bachelor's degree programs and provides majors in engineering, technobiology, and hospitality and tourism management. Each comes equipped with advanced facilities for research, such as an engineering design center for the engineering department.

Its engineering department is the only private campus in the country that has a lab with wind tunnel equipment, the same kind used for the aviation and automotive industries.

Specific study programs cover management, accountancy, business administration, communications, English language studies, elementary school pedagogy, psychology and law.

Students who choose to study electrical engineering and system informatics can also enjoy a telecommunications laboratory and a data network that makes use of routers and switches from Cisco and Mikrotik, which are widely used in different corporations and industries. Participating students can also get the chance to be a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).

The campus has been designed to accommodate students with disabilities, with facilities like wheelchair platforms for better accessibility. It also provide seats made with left-handed students in mind. From a security standpoint, fire extinguishers are scattered throughout the campus, with the main building having fire-extinguishing pipes installed on the roof.

The presence of this campus is sure to give students more options for pursuing a higher education.

"Our strength is our sense of tradition and our strong, 57-year academic reputation. In addition, our new physical facilities will surely produce trusted, quality and reputable graduates," Prasetyantoko said.

Its strategic location at BSD City gives students access to a wide range of modern facilities outside of the campus to fulfill their needs. Its Intermodal Station area provides easy access to transportation. A commuter line stops at the nearby Rawa Buntu station. There will also be shuttle buses traveling to and from Jakarta and BSD City.

Nearby residential zones provide access to housing and apartment clusters. Recreational outlets are also available, as are centers for sports and shopping, as well as commercial and industrial facilities.

Another benefit students can enjoy is the benefit of being a resident of BSD City. Not only does the area come equipped with the latest in network infrastructure technology, it also provides unique services for mobile applications that everyone in the city can access, such as e-wallets, community platforms and business performance management solutions.

All of this makes for an environment that is not only very conducive for learning, but also for living.

"The presence of Unika Atma Jaya will enrich the ecosystem of BSD City as a Smart City, especially in its education sector. This is in line with the project of turning BSD City's Digital Hub into the Silicon Valley of Indonesia. We hope that we can serve as a talent pool that can create quality human resources who are ready to compete, especially in tech companies," said Dhony Rahajoe, is managing director of the President Office for Sinar Mas Land, BSD City's developer.

This new campus at BSD City officially began class activities on Aug. 7. Come October 2017, it will begin accepting new students for the 2018 school year.
