Indonesia is on track for 2018 Asian Games, says Minister Puan

Indonesia is on track for 2018 Asian Games, says Minister Puan

he Coordinating Human Development and Cultural Minister Puan Maharani accompanied Vice President Jusuf Kalla at a meeting with President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Sheikh Ahmad Al Sabah in Jakarta recently. The meeting, held at INASGOC Multifunction Hall, discussed the country’s readiness for the 2018 Asian Games to be held in Jakarta and Palembang in August 2018.

“Vice President Jusuf Kalla informed the OCA delegation of Indonesia’s preparations for the 2018 Asian Games, in terms of the infrastructure, the sports and other supporting events. They are well aware of the development and approved of what Indonesia is doing,” said Puan.

OCA President Sabah said they appreciated the country’s efforts to ensure the event, which is now entering the countdown phase and set to start in less than a year, will be a successful one. The OCA hoped that the targets set can be achieved, and were ready to support the 18th Asian Games.

Besides discussing the preparations for the event, Minister Puani, who is Deputy Chair of the 2018 Asian Games Steering Committee, witnessed the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the 2018 Asian Games between the Indonesia Asian Games 2018 Organizing Committee (INASGOC), represented by Chief Executive of INASGOC, Erick Thohir, and several supporting partners.

Puan further said that Indonesia and the OCA have agreed on 40 types of sports and games to be included in the event. As for the 642 planned supporting events, the OCA is flexible. Also discussed was the pre-Asian Games test event which will be held in February 2018. She added to ensure the smooth running of the Games and to anticipate traffic in Jakarta, the committee and related sectors will prepare special lanes for the athletes’ mobility. "We will set up special lanes so that the participants are accommodated and the public will not be burdened," she said.

Minister Puan again stated that Indonesia was optimistic about the Games, and that all preparations were on track. “The meeting between the OCA and the government was a success. Everything is on track, and Indonesia is optimistic that the 2018 Asian Games will be a success,” she said.

Attending the meeting were Vice President Kalla, Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrowi, Minister of Public Works and People’s Housing Basoeki Hadimoeljono, INASCOG chief executive Erick, South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin, acting deputy head of cultural affairs coordination at the Office of the Coordinating Human Development and Cultural Minister Nyoman Shuida and representatives of the OCA.
