oordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Puan Maharani has distributed school materials to the students of YPK Sota elementary school in Merauke, Papua.
The minister provided 218 packages of school materials as aid, symbolically handing packages to 10 students representing the student body, as well as two packages of sports equipment to the school principal. The minister also distributed 153 packages of supplemental foods (PMT) to YPK Sota and 65 PMT packages to MI Al Maarif Sota.
During her visit, the minister took part in a group photo session with the students and had a lively discussion with everyone. "How do you feel, getting a new schoolbag? Those who haven’t gotten their new bags can get it from the principal later," Puan said.
In the middle of the event, the minister noticed a printed shirt one of the students wore. She asked the student about it. “That writing: ‘Dark skin is my identity, curly hair is special.’ Do you know what that means?” she asked.
The student, Yoga, said the writing referred to the people of Papua, and received a prize from the minister for answering correctly.
Puan reminded everyone that the people of Sota were part of the Indonesian nation. "Children, and all who live in border areas, don’t ever forget that we are all Indonesians,” she stressed.
After distributing the school aid at SD YPK Sota, the coordinating minister and her entourage visited the construction site of the Sota Public Health Center (Puskesmas). The health center is expected to be finished by the year’s end, and the minister wanted to make sure its construction was on schedule.
Accompanying the coordinating minister on her Sota visit were: Health Minister Nila F Moeloek; Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohanna Yembise; National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head Willem Rampangilei; the head of the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN); House of Representatives member Alfia Reziani; Merauke Regent Frederikus Gebze and the Merauke Deputy Police Chief.
