Patek Philippe’s Calatrava Ref. 6006G: where graphic elegance meets ultra-thin design

S

wiss timepiece manufacturer Patek Philippe has just launched its latest product variant at the jewelry and watch expo Baselworld 2017: the Calatrava Ref. 6006G wristwatch, distinctive for its graphic elegance with the assets of an ultra-thin self-winding caliber 240 featuring subsidiary seconds.

Launched to mark the 40th anniversary of the caliber 240 timepiece feature manufactured by Patek Philippe, the new wristwatch features an analog date and a sub-dial for its seconds. In addition to that, the wristwatch’s dial also has a subtle tongue-in-cheek eccentricity evident in the unorthodox position of the subsidiary seconds dial between four and five o’clock.

Why is this product designed in this manner? The reason is to adjust itself to the peculiarity of the caliber 240 PS movement. In 1991, Patek Philippe was praised for presenting the first Calatrava, of the Ref. 5000 model, with its ultra-thin self-winding feature, in addition to the seconds sub-dial that has become an unmistakably distinctive feature of the Calatrava product line.

More than 20 years down the line, the timepiece brand launched the new Calatrava Ref. 6006 model, which replaces the product line’s 6000 series launched in 2005. The new model is made of 18K white gold, which further enhances the elegance of its sleek geometric design vocabulary.

The product’s classic round white-gold case has also been enlarged by 2 millimeters to 39 mm compared to the previous model to give it extra prominence on its user’s wrist. At the same time, the larger diameter also adds elegance to its case, highlighting its slender proportions.

The design allows the product to have more space for a larger dial, encouraging the designers and dial production specialists to pull out all the stops.

Despite its new looks, the new model also bears the familiar characteristics of the Calatrava product line, featuring the two-tone graphic concept, the uncluttered markings with plain Arabic numerals as well as excellently readable analog date with a scale on the outer circumference of the dial.

The product line’s subsidiary seconds dial in its asymmetric position between four and five o’clock, meanwhile, is readily visible and always worth a glance on the timepiece. Originality, meanwhile, lies in the details of the product’s design. It is visible in the wristwatch’s ebony black and silver for the dials, as well as in the differentiated finissage designed according to each of the individual circles.

The wristwatch’s center, meanwhile, is black and glistens with a fine sunburst finish, while the silvery minute circle is delicately guilloched and printed with black time markers indicating five-minute intervals. The outer edge of the dial, meanwhile, is contiguously ebony-black but structured in two different textures: the date circle has a sunburst pattern and the hour circle is sublimely guilloched.

The wristwatch’s silvery seconds sub-dial, furthermore, stands between four and five o’clock to create a light-in-the-darkness contrast. The hour and minute hands of the new model have also been modified in comparison to the one preceding it: they are longitudinally pierced with white-lacquered baton-style hands that are perceptibly broader yet still look lightweight. Additionally, the date hand is now tipped with a red-lacquered arrow that precisely points at the date numeral, replacing the lunar crescent arrow used in the previous Calatrava model.

.

Finally, the wristwatch’s time window is framed by a broad, mirror-polished bezel to fit the classic Calatrava case in 18K white gold. In addition to that, the product’s sapphire-crystal case back looks attractive upon viewed from different angles. The bridge side of the lavishly finished caliber 240 PS C’s movement, meanwhile, is decorated with polished chamfers, parallel Geneva striping, gold-filled engravings and the recessed 22K gold minirotor that displays an engraved Calatrava cross. The highly precise movement has a rate tolerance between minus three to plus two seconds per day.

Last but not least, the wristwatch’s shiny black alligator strap, with its large square scales, complements the watch’s distinctive elegance, secured with a fold-over clasp in 18K white gold. The new Calatrava Ref. 6006 G will not only help you to tell the time accurately; it will also look good on you and will make you feel good when wearing it.
