Directorate General of Immigration officiates Magelang office unit

T

he Directorate General of Immigration recently opened a new Immigration Work Unit Office (UKK) with the Wonosubo Immigration Class II Office at Mungkid in Magelang regency. The officiation of the office took place on April 3 and was witnessed by immigration director general Ronny F. Sompie.

The building used for this UKK is the property of the Magelang regional government and occupies 1,920 square meters. The main building covers 1,220 square meters, while two agency houses sit atop 700 square meters of land.

In his opening speech, the immigration director general said that this UKK was designed to add to the number of offices that would serve the public in all things immigration related.

"Right now there are 125 immigration offices in Indonesia. Meanwhile there are around 500 regency and municipal offices throughout Indonesia. As such, to ensure the proper reach of immigration services, especially for travel documents in the form of passports, the low number of offices has become a barrier. You need to travel long distances just to reach an immigration office," Ronny said.

The officiation of this Magelang UKK raises the number of UKKs owned by the Directorate General of Immigration to a total of six, with the last one it officiated being a UKK in Gunung Sitoli in the Nias Islands last week. The office itself has already undergone a cooperation agreement that was signed by the regent of Magelang and the Directorate General of Immigration on Feb. 9.

Tavip Supriyanto, the acting regent of Magelang, welcomed the opening of this UKK. He said this UKK would make it easier for the people of Magelang to get access to immigration services.

"With this office, we at least hope that there can be a positive impact for the public and for the business world, as well as for tourism in Magelang," Tavip said.

Aside from passport services for Indonesian citizens and stay permits for foreigners, this UKK also will conduct supervision of immigration affairs and will make it easier to coordinate with relevant parties for supervising foreigners in Magelang.

At the opening event, Magelang's acting regency secretary Eko Triyono tried out the UKK's services and was helped by a local official in changing passports.

"It's very easy. All you need is an electronic identification card and your old passport. Then the officials will verify your data and take a photo. The process only takes 10 minutes," Eko said.
