fter receiving a permit from the Communications and Information Ministry on May 24, Telkomsel has officially launched its Telkomsel 5G service, becoming the first cellular operator to offer 5G in Indonesia.

The launch is an important milestone for the company, which marked its 26th anniversary on May 26.

Telkomsel’s 5G service, introduced with the theme “5G: Unlock the Future”, is now available for commercial use in key areas across nine cities in its first phase, which includes the Telkomsel Smart Office and a number of residential areas in Jakarta, Solo City Hall, Telkom University and the Bandung Institute of Technology, as well as several GraPARI locations in Surabaya, Makassar, Bali, Batam, Medan, Solo, Balikpapan and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

To avail themselves of Telkomsel’s 5G service, users must make sure they are using a 5G device and a uSIM card within the locations covered by Telkomsel. A number of Telkomsel customers have had their 5G feature activated already, with activation taking place in stages. Customers can also visit Telkomsel’s website to fill in a registration form for 5G activation alongside providing feedback.

Current smartphones that support Telkomsel 5G are models equipped with 5G NSA technology at 2300 MHz, which includes the Oppo Reno 5, Huawei Mate 40, Vivo X60 and Vivo X60 Pro. Telkomsel plans to work closely with manufacturers to provide a wider range of options for customers, including Apple and Samsung.

Similar to Telkomsel’s 3G and 4G broadband, the 5G service can be enjoyed using existing data plans. It plans to introduce a 5G-only service, that will be upgraded continuously as Telkomsel customer needs increase.
