ndonesia’s Operation Task Force (Satgas Ops) on Priority Watch List Management, opened a cooperation with Microsoft via a meeting at the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Los Angeles on Wednesday (10/11/2021).

Ajar Edi, the Director of Microsoft Indonesia, was also present at the meeting assured that he was ready to help the government in any way. Previous cooperation efforts have also been carried out with the Ministry of Communication and Information, which is also a member of the Ops Task Force.

"We have a program specifically prepared to increase human resources (human resources), and it can be accessed by anyone, including ministry employees," Ajar said.

In turn, the head of the task force, Anom Wibowo, also said that he is ready to help Microsoft in patent application. It is revealed that the company currently has a total of 326 patent applications in Indonesia.

Dede Mia Yusanti, Director of Patents, Integrated Circuit Layout Design (DTLST) and Trade Secrets, also used this opportunity to discuss patent and copyrights from an Artificial Intelligence (AI) point of view.

Dede also questioned how protections are provided for software in the United states that are under patent, because software is protected under copyright in Indonesia. The AI engine work system can detect whether the product produced is a patent.

Moreover, Dede also asked for advice to increase efforts to increase the number of AI patents in Indonesia. According to Steven Spellman Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) Microsoft, AI has become a booming technology since 2017, even though it has been around for at least five decades.

"AI is only exploding now because there is massive computing power, big data and algorithms that are much better than before," he explained.

The number of AI patent has significantly rise in countries such as the United States and China. The increased is estimated by Microsoft to be around 30 thousand in 2017. These patents contain machine innovations for seeing, speaking, speaking and knowing.

Further revealed by Dede, “Companies like Microsoft or IBM have the most AI patents. In addition, of course, Chinese companies.”

Steven said the key to patent innovation in AI is to focus on new technology that are being utilized by AI to solve problems. A common mistake for those who make patent applications but failed is because they focus more on how AI technology works. “So if there is a language problem, for example, the patent talks about what innovations are being offered to solve the problem,” he explained.

This meeting was also attended by Director of Cooperation and Intellectual Property Empowerment Daulat P. Silitonga, Director of Brands and Geographical Indications Nofli and Head of the Sub-Directorate of Special Economic Crimes (Dittupideksus) of the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) Moh. Samsu.

This meeting is expected to result in cooperation that can help Indonesia get out of the Priority Watch List (PWL) status by the United States Trade Representative (USTR). This status is said to have the potential to reduce foreign investment that can be received by Indonesia because it is labeled as a country with rampant piracy.
