he Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry held a hybrid flag ceremony to commemorate the 2022 National Day of Education on May 5. Nadiem Makarim, wearing traditional costume from Flores, acted as the ceremonial master. The hybrid ceremony was held at the education ministry’s office grounds under strict health protocols as Jakarta was undergoing public activity restriction (PPKM) level 2.

Throughout the ceremony, themed “Leading the recovery, moving toward independent learning”, Nadiem reminded the audience of the ministry’s breakthroughs going into the third year of the pandemic. The success of the Merdeka Belajar (independent learning) curriculum not only positively affected students, parents and teachers, but also other members of the G20 forum.

“This year, we are demonstrating that Indonesia is no longer a follower but a leader in the global recovery,” Nadiem said.

Students and teachers who previously struggled with learning loss due to remote learning have been aided by the ministry’s efforts to reach out and assist them in the teaching and learning process with the new curriculum. Now, the Merdeka Belajar curriculum is used by 140,000 educational institutions throughout Indonesia. "That means that hundreds of thousands of Indonesian children will learn in a much more fun and liberating way," Nadiem explained.

“We will continue to take command, to be at the forefront of the recovery and advocate for Merdeka Belajar.” Nadiem said, encouraging students and educators at the end of his speech.

In the same spirit, Nadiem also congratulated artists and other players in the creative industry for their comeback as the economy recovered. “Our persistence in innovation has led to the cultural endowment fund and the first cultural channel in Indonesia. Now, there is no longer a limitation on space and support for expression in order to promote our culture," he said.

Attending the ceremony offline were 252 participants in traditional costume from various regions in Indonesia. Online, there were a total of 2,700 attendees consisting of honor students, representative from various education houses, the two first Guru Penggerak (pioneer teachers), universities from the Kampus Merdeka (independent campus) learning program, alumni of the Kemah Budaya Kaum Muda (youth cultural camp) and creative industry players and the 2020-2021 Language Ambassadors.

The Nadiem also presented the prestigious Satya Lencana Karya Satya to six civil servants representing 2,740 civil servants from the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry.

This year’s celebration also showcased the assets of Indonesia’s cultural wealth including tenun (handwoven textiles), jamu (traditional herbal medicine) and tempeh. The celebrations ended with a performance of reog ponorogo from the Reog Ponorogo Jabodetabek Association.
