Rising dangdut star Via Vallen has been chosen to sing “Meraih Bintang” (Reaching for the Stars), the official theme song of the 2018 Asian Games.

Created by producer Pay Siburian, “Meraih Bintang” is a modern dangdut song that aims to boost Indonesians’ spirits to cheer on their athletes at the upcoming sports event.

“We appointed Via Vallen as one of the Asian Games artists because of her outstanding talent and huge influence on the Indonesian music scene,” said Erick Thohir, head of the 2018 Asian Games executive committee, in a statement.

The filming of the “Meraih Bintang” music video was completed before Idul Fitri. It showcases dangdut dance moves combined with electronic music with Via dressed in a red outfit. It also features several sports such as archery, boxing and badminton.

“Meraih Bintang” was revealed to the public for the first time at the 50 Hari Menjelang Asian Games 2018 (50 Days to Asian Games 2018) concert that was held by state-owned television station TVRI.

During the concert, which was held on Saturday, the committee also introduced the design of the medals that will be given to athletes. Up to 4,066 medals will be distributed in 463 competitions during the 2018 Asian Games.

“The concept of the concert was to involve a range of elements, starting from the introduction of the medal, music performances and meeting with local athletes,” said TVRI director Helmi Yahya. “We want this concert to be the kick-off event ahead of the Games.”

Several local athletes were introduced to the public during the concert including Papua-based softball player Lidia Anna Krey, archer Diananda Choirunisa and weightlifter Eko Yuli Irawan, who won the silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

“Through the concert we want people to start getting ready to celebrate the Games,” said Erick, adding that he wanted all Indonesians to get involved in the event. (wir/kes)
