Storing food is one of the hottest discussions in the food industry. After all, we want to be sure that what we consume is fresh, tasty and of top quality.

While cold storage is necessary for many types of food, the chilly air may negatively affect others. The Good Housekeeping Institute (GHI) lists a number of foods that should remain outside the fridge:

Melon

Whole melons will maintain its quality at room temperature. GHI food experts recommend that it should only be stored in the refrigerator after it has been cut, preferably covered with plastic.

Avocado

Avocadoes ripen at room temperature and reach their best when placed inside a brown paper bag. There is no problem with putting the fruit in a fridge, but the cold will prevent it from ripening.

Coffee

While some consider keeping a closed package of coffee in the fridge, others think that it will absorb the scent of other refrigerated goods. Coffee needs to be stored in an airtight container inside a cupboard.

Garlic

Although storing garlic in the fridge makes it easier to find, it is best stored in a dry place, which has good ventilation.

Tomato

Tomatoes taste more delicious when stored on a table or near a window where the temperature is warmer. Although tomatoes will not last longer if they are stored like this, the quality will remain as long as they are consumed within a few days.

Cake

If there is no fresh cream on the cake, store it in a cool and dark place. Perfect examples include a plastic container, a can, or a stand with a glass dome. This storage method will allow the cake to last for up to three days.

Onion

Store onions in a dry and ventilated area instead of in the fridge. Make sure that the storage is dark enough to prevent them from sprouting. If you cut an onion and some are still left over, throw it in the freezer. (saz/mut)
