Two state airport operators, which have a duopoly over airports across Indonesia, recorded hefty profits last year on the back of higher revenue from services provided to airlines.

Stronger profits were expected this year as airlines are expanding fleets, PT Angkasa Pura I (AP I) and PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) reported late on Monday to the House of Representatives' Commission VI for industry and state enterprises.

AP I president director Bambang Daryoto said the company booked a profit (before tax) of Rp 391.86 billion (US$43 million) in 2007, up 6 percent from 2006's Rp 332.05 billion.

The profits were higher than the firm's initial estimation.

The company recorded a revenue of Rp 1.54 trillion last year, up from Rp 1.31 trillion in 2006.

The operator gained revenue from services related to aeronautical provision, including passenger, landing, hangar and air traffic management services.

Other services, such as accommodation for haj pilgrims, advertising spaces, visitor services, property rental, parking, and other utilities also contributed to the revenue.

The operator had estimated a net revenue of some Rp 1.72 trillion this year, Bambang said.

The company, however, estimated a lower profit of Rp 363 billion. No details were made available to explain the expected drop.

Currently, AP I manages nine airports in eastern Indonesia. These airports include Adi Sumarmo Airport in Solo, Central Java; Adi Sutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta; Juanda Airport in Surabaya, East Java; Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali; Syamsuddin Noor Airport in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan; Sepinggan Airport in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan; Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar, South Sulawesi; Sam Ratulangi Airport in Manado, North Sulawesi; and Frans Kaisiepo Airport in Biak, Papua.

AP II president director Edie Haryoto, meanwhile, told legislators the firm recorded a profit of Rp 748 billion last year, 16.87 percent higher than the Rp 640 billion secured in 2006. These profits also exceeded their initial target.

The company booked a revenue of Rp 2.22 trillion last year, up 10.4 percent from Rp 2.13 trillion in 2006.

Edie, however, did not provide any details regarding the sources of revenue.

At present, AP II manages 10 major airports in western Indonesia, including the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, both in Jakarta; Polonia Airport in Medan, North Sumatra; Supadio Airport in Pontianak, West Kalimantan; Minangkabau International Airport in Padang, West Sumatra; Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport in Palembang, South Sumatra; Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru, Riau; Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung, West Java; Sultan Iskandarmuda Airport in Banda Aceh, Nangroe Aceh Darussalam; and Raja Haji Fisabilillah Airport in Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands.
