The Directorate General of Air Transportation at the Transportation Ministry received the 2008 Jane's Air Traffic Control Global Award for enabling technology, an official said Thursday.

"The Jane's Airport Review presented the award in Amsterdam on Tuesday," directorate general spokesman Rudi Ricardo told Antara news agency.

"The directorate general and airport information and technology company SITA were chosen for the awards."

SITA is a multinational company based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Jane's ATC Global Award is an annual event by the Jane's Airport Review to extend appreciation and attention to the contributions of air carrier institutions around the world.

"Indonesia established an automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) in 2007 to identify airplanes flying in Indonesian airspace", said Ricardo.

The ADS-B is a cheaper but more accurate system than radar to track aircraft using a satellite-based global positioning system to determine an aircraft's precise position in the air with a radius coverage of 380 kilometers.

Other nominees in the category were French avionics giant Thales for ADS-B in operational usage and Australian Adacel Inc. for its Aurora air traffic management software.

There are five other award categories: Future Systems Award, Industry Award, Development Award, Service Provision Award and Euorpean ATM Award. (nvn)
