JAKARTA: The city administration cannot promote teachers currently employed on a contract basis to permanent staff because it would go against regulations, an official says.
A 2007 governmental regulation stipulates that the local administration could hire contract teachers as permanent teachers if they are hired and paid by the local administration.
Jakarta personnel affairs bureau head Sukesti Martono said all nonpermanent teachers in the city were recruited by the Education Ministry and paid for by the state budget.
"Therefore, they have become the responsibility of the central government. We have explained the reason for this in meetings with related stakeholders," Sukesti told reporters at the City Hall.
He made the statement in response to a protest at city hall the previous day, staged by a group of contract teachers.
Sukesti said the teachers could take their case to the minister. Considering his nationwide authority, he said, the minister could post the teachers anywhere in Indonesia. -JP
