The Jakarta Police has received a positive response for its door-to-door vehicle tax document renewal service in the two months since the program started in January, says an officer.

First Insp. Hasbi Ibrahim, in charge of document administration, said the police had processed documents of 5,298 vehicles, comprising 2,731 motorcycles, 2,262 cars, 274 pick-up trucks and 31 buses.

"It's a good number for the new service. We hope it will increase in the future," he said Wednesday.

The door-to-door service is provided in 10 subdistricts in the Greater Jakarta area: Menteng in Central Jakarta, Cengkareng in West Jakarta, Pondok Pinang in South Jakarta, Pulo Gebang in East Jakarta, Gading Timur in North Jakarta, Bugel in Tangerang municipality, Jelupang in Tangerang regency, Pekayon Jaya in Bekasi municipality, Cibatu in Bekasi regency and Mekarjaya in Depok.

The police have deployed an officer for the new service in each of the 10 subdistricts.

Each officer delivers announcement letters to motorists door-to-door, and can renew and process the motorists' vehicle tax documents.

Brilyantini of Kelapa Dua, Tangerang, hoped the service would expand to her area.

"I'd like to try the service because I heard it is quick. Too bad it is not provided near my home. I usually pay vehicle tax in the Samsat office on Jl. Daan Mogot, West Jakarta. It is so time-consuming because the line is long," she said.

"Sometimes I use the service offered by middlemen to save time."

Deputy of traffic division Adj. Sr. Comr. Firman Santyabudi said police did not have any plan to expand the unit to other subdistricts in the near future.

"To establish the service, we need more officers and motorcycles, and it is not easy to provide that," said Firman on Thursday.

In April, the police will launch a new service unit which allows people to pay vehicle taxes and renew driving licenses at some shopping centers.

The new service will operate in Artha Gading Mall in North Jakarta, Taman Palem Mall in West Jakarta and Pusat Grosir Cililitan in East Jakarta. (trw)
