The Indonesian Motorsports Association (IMI) will open two motorsports schools this year in a bid to find young talent, an executive said here Friday.
"We will start with a school for amateur motorcycle riders under 20 years old... Later, we plan to establish a karting school at our center in Sentul," said IMI chairman Juliari Batubara, referring to the Sentul International Circuit in Bogor, West Java.
Juliari said both schools would allow talented riders and drivers to enjoy free practice, quality training and scholarships.
"We will provide motorcycles and cars for them to practice with. We will also hire world-class instructors to train them," he said.
However, he said only a select list of students would be admitted to the schools, citing the association's preference for those with great talent but lacking financial support.
"These schools are not for professional racers who participate in various races in affiliation with clubs or sponsors. They are for amateurs," he said.
"We will admit 20 youths in every batch starting from the middle of this year. Their training will last three years," he said.
The IMI hopes the schools can produce new generations of motorsport racers to represent the country in international championships.
"After three years, we hope the graduates are at least able to win at Asian level races," he said.
