Policeman commits suicide in Kendal

KENDAL, Central Java: An a Sukorejo Police officer shot himself dead early Tuesday, allegedly over the mishandling of a criminal case.

According to the police report, First Adj. Insp. Darnyoto, 47, killed himself using his revolver, shooting his right temple.

"It's a suicide. But we are still investigating," Sukorejo Police chief Sen. Adj. Com. Muhammad Naufal Yahya said Tuesday. Four witnesses have been questioned over the death, he said.

According to the deceased's family, Darnyoto was to attend a disciplinary court hearing on Tuesday. However, Yahya denied the hearing was the reason behind Darnyoto's suicide.

The was no such case scheduled, he said.

Darnyoto's body was buried in Sambungsari village cemetery in Weleri, Kendal. He is survived by his wife and three kids.

At least six cases of police suicides have been reported in Central Java with various causes ranging from love affairs to just minor quarrels at a dangdut performance arena. -- JP
