BANDUNG: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has detained two senior officials of the West Java provincial fishery and maritime resources office for their alleged involvement in a graft case worth Rp 8.4 billion (US$893,600) in Pangandaran.
Ade Kusmana and Asep Hartioman, also former members of the procurement committee administering aid for Pangandaran tsunami victims, have been accused of marking up the 2006 ship procurement for fishermen affected by the disaster, causing Rp 8.4 billion in losses to the state.
Chief of the fishery and maritime resources office Darsono said the two suspects, who have been detained since May 6, 2008, were interrogated after the commission received a complaint from fishermen in Pangandaran.
"All canoes, vessels and nets distributed to the fishermen are classified as scrapped goods and some of them were damaged when the fishermen received them," he said.
Yanto Subiyanto, spokesman for the provincial government, said outgoing governor Danny Setiawan had entrusted the case to the commission and all sides were asked to cooperate in the investigation.
He said the two would be suspended from their positions during the trial.
He added the provincial government allocated Rp 25 billion to procure fishing vessels, canoes, nets and other equipment to be distributed to fishermen affected by the disaster. -- JP
