The Mid-Autumn Festival which falls on the 15th day of the lunar month (3 October 2009) is  a much celebrated Chinese festival.  This annual occasion marks an end of the harvesting period and a close to a year’s hard work. Families gather and rejoice over a bountiful harvest and feasts are prepared in anticipation of a better harvest in the year to come. Moon cakes are traditionally featured in this sumptuous feast.

According to famous Chinese fable, the legendary archer Hou Yi and his kind-hearted wife Chang Er was a loving couple. To reward Hou Yi for his heroic deeds, the Goddess of immortality granted him an elixir of immortality. One fateful day, the evil and scheming Feng Meng slipped into Hou Yi’s residence to steal the heavenly elixir. To prevent the elixir from failing into the wrong hands, Chang Er swallowed it. Immediately, she found her self drifting skyward towards the moon.

The common folk heard of Chang Er’s sacrifice and flocked to ask continued peace and showed their gratitude with sweets pastries and fruits. It is now said that during the Mid-Autumn Festival, when the moon is full and at its brightest, you can see the willowy silhouette of Chang Er – now the Goddess of the moon.

The custom of gift-exchanging during this festive period has since been observed and moon cakes remain the favored gift of the season.
