he producers of Photocopier, an award-winning film about a young girl determined to uncover the truth behind her sexual assault, decided on Monday to remove the name of one of the scriptwriters from the movie's credits following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Rekata Studio and Kaninga Pictures, the studios behind the award-winning 2021 film Penyalin Cahaya (released internationally as Photocopier) revealed on Monday that they had removed the name of a scriptwriter from the film’s credits because of his alleged involvement in a sexual abuse case.

“We decided to remove the [scriptwriter's] name from Photocopier's credits and in all promotional materials. This person is no longer a part of Photocopier and Rekata Studio,” the studios said in a joint statement, adding that the film’s producers were “committed [to creating a] safe space free of sexual abuse".

The film’s original credits listed the names of only two scriptwriters, director Regas Bhanuteja and writer Henricus Pria. The latter’s name is no longer displayed.

The film tells the story of a university student who discovers that pictures of her in a drunken state have been published online without her consent. After losing a scholarship as a result, she begins to investigate who is behind the photos, and on her journey, encourages survivors of sexual assault to step forward and hold their attackers accountable.

After its world premiere at the 26th Busan International Film Festival in October 2021, the film won big at home, earning 12 Citra Awards, Indonesia’s most-regarded film awards. One of the awards it won was Best Original Script.

Netflix acquired the film’s distribution rights and will start streaming it on Jan. 13. The streaming service has not released a statement regarding this issue at the time of writing.
