Baris is a Bali
warrior dance usually performed by men. The movements are dramatic. The
dancers wear an elaborate head decoration, from a gold-colored head band
to leaves and strings of cempaka blossoms. The painting depicts the
dance being performed in a traditional village setting.
About the artist:
Madra was born in the Bali village of Kutuh around 1960. He first
learned to paint from celebrated Balinese artist I Nyoman Lesug. An
important exponent of the Kutuh style of painting, his works have often
been exhibited in Bali and have become the proud possessions of many
galleries.
