recent video in which Go-Jek CEO Nadiem Makarim invites drivers from competitors Grab and Uber to join the company has caused a backlash online.
In the 1.37-minute clip posted on YouTube, which has since been made private from public viewing, Nadiem claims that Go-Jek was the leading company in the ride-hailing app business and prides itself as an app made by Indonesians.
"With a gross rate of Rp 2,500 per kilometer, a daily bonus that can reach up to Rp 100,000 and thousands of order requests from Go-Food and Go-Mart, we are the best option in Jakarta," says the Harvard Business School graduate.
Nadiem promises to directly admit Grab and Uber drivers to the company, adding that by transferring to Go-Jek, they would contribute to making Indonesia come out on top in the business competition with other countries.
"Whatever your decision is, you are already Jakarta's street heroes, don't ever forget that. However, if you have the willingness to support the country, if you have that semangat 45 [national spirit] in you, come and join us," he adds.
Drivers interested in joining could come to a recruitment location wearing their uniform and bringing their smartphone with them. There, they would be given a new uniform for free and a bonus of Rp 150,000.
The video prompted criticism from netizens shortly after it was posted. As this article is written, it received more thumbs downs than thumbs ups on YouTube. Our request for comment has not yet been answered by Go-Jek representatives. (kes)
