akartans will have the chance to enjoy a marathon screening of short movies at HelloFest 2016, to be held in the Plenary Hall and the main lobby of the Jakarta Convention Center, Central Jakarta, on Sept. 24 and 25.

Dubbed the largest visual content festival in Southeast Asia, HelloFest 2016 is set to screen hundreds of local and foreign short films, including one directed by musician Eva Celia and the work of renowned Vine video creator Pinot.

Besides the movie concert, the festival will also exhibit visual content in the form of comics, animations and videos; talk shows on the movie and visual creative industry; as well as performances from Youtube artists and cosplay artists. Visitors can also enjoy the new cinematic experience of watching silent films through peep holes.

“In its 11th installment, we have upgraded the festival by involving internationally renowned visual creators. We aim to find new talent in the creative industry and to expose them to a bigger audience,” said festival founder Wahyu Aditya at a press conference on Thursday at Galeri Indonesia Kaya, Central Jakarta.

For this year’s HelloFest short movie competition, the organizer received 510 short films during the submission period from June 24 to Aug. 29. The short films may be no longer than eight seconds or eight minutes.

Wahyu said 244 of the submissions were ultra-short films, while 136 were animations.

The judges include filmmakers Angga Dwimas Sasongko, Ipang Wahid and visual director Motulz.

Angga, whose short film Strangely Beautiful won the competition in the second year of the festival in 2005, said a short movie was not only a stepping stone for filmmakers but also had potential economic value.

“The film industry needs re-generation, quality filmmakers, and for that purpose we need a platform and event to net them.”

Pre-sale tickets are available at hellofest.com with prices ranging from Rp 52,500 to Rp 80,000. (ebf)
