The Cannes-winning Indonesian short film Prenjak/In the Year of Monkey has won another international award in Singapore.

Directed by Wregas Bhanuteja, the movie was recognized as the Best Southeast Asian Short Film at the 27th Singapore International Film Festival’s Silver Screen Awards, which is part of the Singapore Media Festival 2016.

The jury panel, which was comprised of Indonesian director Mira Lesmana, Hawaii International Film Festival programming director Anderson Le and Singaporean filmmaker Bertrand Lee, praised Prenjak as “inventive in its story and imagery”. The 13-minute long film was also deemed “bold yet sensitive—sharp yet delicate”, as well as “presenting a dynamic new voice in Indonesian cinema that challenges social mores that is both eclectic and humanist”.

Prenjak tells the story of Diah who is in desperate need of money. She seeks help from her friend, Jarwo, by selling matchsticks at the price of Rp 10,000 (less than US$1) each. She allows Jarwo to look under her skirt until the matchstick’s flame dies out if he decides to buy one.

The film competed in the festival alongside 15 other regional short films, including On the Origin of the Fear by Indonesian director Bayu Prihantoro Filemon, which brought home the special mention award.

Prior to the screening in Singapore, Prenjak was entered in various international and local film festivals, such as the Cannes Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival and Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival. (kes)
