L

ike its neighboring island of Bangka, Belitung offers its own delicious and popular take on mi yamin (noodles in sweet soy sauce) or mi bangka.

If you’re ever in Tanjung Pandan, spare a little time to stop by Warung Mie Achoi and sample its delicious signature dish that has become the apple of locals’ eyes.

Located on Jl. Madura, the warung (café) is housed in a modest row of shops and seems to be packed with loyal customers every single day. A favorite breakfast spot for the people of Tanjung Pandan, it is advisable to come early as the shop is only open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and its noodles tend to be sold out by 10 a.m.

Its popularity has seen Warung Mie Achoi gain legions of admirers from outside the island as well. It is more than likely that you’ll come across a group of tourists from Jakarta when you dine here — something that I experienced during my visit.

Owner and namesake Pak Achoi said he started the business in his younger days. “He had already tried his hand at selling noodles by using a pushcart and going around his neighborhood when he was just a teenager. And he hasn’t stopped since,” added his wife, who has been by Pak Achoi’s side throughout.

Service at the warung is swift, and my appetite grew even more as I witnessed Pak Achoi preparing great quantities of noodles. Pak Achoi’s mi yamin consists of noodles, bean sprouts, Chinese mustard greens and minced pork.

The handmade noodles felt smooth on my palate and the taste was amplified when combined with the savory minced pork. The short cooking time took the texture and freshness of the bean sprouts and Chinese mustard greens up a notch.

The mi yamin is also served with a bowl of wonton soup, which comprises fish balls, otak-otak (fish cakes) and soft steamed wonton in a refreshing and flavorful broth. Another plus at this joint is the hospitality offered by Pak Achoi and his wife, which makes it an even easier decision to come back in the near future. (kes)
