The elections in Jakarta and elsewhere have been the most popular topic among Indonesians in both the physical and the digital world, and Twitter is no exception. Here are some of the top tweets.

The first round of Jakarta’s 2017 gubernatorial election, held on Wednesday, is behind us.

The elections in Jakarta and elsewhere have been the most popular topic among Indonesians in both the physical and the digital world, and Twitter is no exception. The microblogging site recently shared data related to the regional elections.

Here are five interesting facts on Twitter related to the elections:

1. Between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15, Indonesian netizens posted 11.2 million tweets related to the regional elections.

2. On the day of the elections, 1 million tweets mentioned the event.

3. The most popular hashtag on Feb. 15 was #VoteAhok.

4. The most popular tweet on the election day was one posted by Belgian professional footballer Radja Nainggolan, who tweeted to wish Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama the best of luck.

Another top tweet, according to Twitter, was by American electro house musician/record producer Steve Aoki.

A tweet by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo encouraging citizens to vote for the sake of their region's development was also very popular, with more than 5,000 retweets and 10,000 likes.

Singer Sherina's bold statement on her preference among the three candidates in Jakarta was also retweeted and liked by many netizens.

Australian top Muslim leader Shaikh Mohammad Tawhidi's tweet on his support for Ahok alongside a photo of him with the incumbent governor was also popular online.

5. Aceh was the most-talked about city during the elections, followed by Jakarta, Banten, Banda Aceh and Bekasi. (kes)
