Despite fasting from dawn until dusk, Muslims need to pay attention to liquid intake to prevent dehydration.

Drinking mineral water will help significantly to rehydrate the body. However, there are alternatives to water to help replenish the body, especially when taking in eight full glasses of water during non-fasting hours feels like too much of a task.

Eat watermelons

Water comprises 92 percent of a watermelon. It also contains salt, calcium and magnesium, which helps in replenishing the body after a whole day of fasting.

Drink milk

Not only does it help with calcium intake, drinking low fat milk or chocolate milk can also assist greatly in maintaining the body’s hydration level throughout the whole day. Aside from drinking it as it is, you could also combine it with cereal after breaking the fast.

Eat soup

Before heading to the main course, try eating soup to break the fast. A clear, hot soup is recommended more than a creamy one. Starting iftar (breaking the fast meal) with soup may boost your water intake and energy level.

Have a smoothie

Fruits that are high in water level, such as oranges, watermelons, apples, pineapples and peaches, can be mixed into a smoothie. Add water or ice while blending the fruits.

Avoid salty foods

As tempting as a gorengan (fried snacks) during iftar is, it is better to avoid them as salty foods can dehydrate you. The human body only requires a small dose of salt daily, which is attainable from vegetables or fruits. Although easier said than done, try substituting gorengan with coconut water, apples or baby carrots.

Eat more greens

Nutrition considerations aside, greens, such as iceberg lettuce, which is 96 percent water, could help to hydrate the body. Thus, a bowl of salad, mixed with cucumbers and tomatoes, during iftar can help boost your water level.

Use moisturizers

Apply moisturizer after a morning shower to keep your skin well-hydrated and fresh. Re-apply at least once more before you sleep. Sunscreen is also an essential item for those partaking in outdoor activities.

Do not over wash your face

Although washing your face with water may help with hydration, too much of the action may strip your skin of essential oils, which could dehydrate it. Therefore, remember to apply moisturizer after washing your face. (mas/kes)
