icellar water is officially back. The popular beauty trend, which dates back to France in the 1900s, is more popularly known as makeup remover, but it can be so much more.

Below are some of the things to know about this beauty product:

All-in-one alternative

Dermatologists suggest that micellar water can be an all-in-one alternative to your typical skin-care routine.

Essentially, micellar water is a mix of gentle cleaning oil molecules suspended in soft water, which is water with low concentrations of magnesium and calcium ions. While the oil molecules gently attract buildups of sebum, dirt, makeup and other impurities, the soft water acts to gently wash away the impurities collected.

Soft water is great for this as it does not leave any form of residue or build up on the skin. As such, micellar water has the ability to remove light makeup, as well as cleanse, tone and provide moisture to the skin all at once.

No rinsing

“Unlike soap, micelles dissolve impurities without stripping the skin, and since it has the same viscosity of water, the face feels clean and rejuvenated after treatment,” said board-certified dermatologist Rhonda Klein as quoted by Reader's Digest.

“It also doesn’t require water to work, so no rinsing is required.”

Not for heavy makeup

Micellar water won’t be able to effectively remove heavy makeup, like waterproof mascara or lip stains.

Not for all types of skin

Klein notes that an oil-based product like micellar water may not be the best option for people with oily skin.

While micellar water is good for sensitive, dry and normal skin types, the product may not be the best solution for people with oily or acne-prone skin, who should find products that avoid oils. For those with this skin type, micellar water may be good for use as a light makeup remover or a midday refreshing cleanse, but stronger facial cleansers may be necessary to ensure that your skin gets the deeper cleansing that it needs.
