he screening of feature documentary film Banda: The Forgotten Trail has been canceled in Ambon following a complaint by people of Wandan descent, which includes Banda Ely and Elat locals, to the Maluku Legislative Council, which was lodged on July 31.
As reported by tempo.co, the film had stirred debate in the province prior to the local cinema in the capital city of Ambon canceling screenings, eventually disappointing the public who were anticipating its release at the XXI Ambon City Center cinema.
Screening times had already been promoted and drawn public interest in viewing the movie.
"I came all the way from Banda to Ambon only to see the movie, unfortunately it’s been cancelled," Ria Leida said.

It is currently still unclear whether Banda will eventually be screened in Ambon or not.
Film company Lifelike Pictures issued a statement on Tuesday following reports that protesters had called for the postponement of Banda's premiere, which was slated for Aug. 3, over claims that the film contained historical misconceptions.
“From the beginning, the documentary’s writer as well as the team have known of and acknowledged the existence of Banda Eli and Elat locals as a group of people who migrated when there was colonization in Banda, both before and after 1621,” the statement said. (liz/kes)
