Four higher education institutions are reportedly involved in the development of a national electric car.

Technology, Research and Higher Education Minister Muhammad Nasir told Antara news agency on Tuesday that among the institutions involved in the ministry's research, which is currently entering the prototype-development preparation phase, are Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta, Central Java; the University of Indonesia in Depok, West Java; the Bandung Institute of Technology in West Java; and the November 10 Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya in East Java.

"We have created a development road map until 2020," he said, adding that the target was to manufacture the national car widely and start selling it in 2020.

Previously the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry stated that it was preparing a regulation to push the development of an electric car as part of the government's commitment to supporting clean energy utilization to combat climate change. (dan/kes)
