urakarta-born sketch artist Sigit Santosa is showcasing his most recent works in a solo exhibition that will run through Jan. 23 at Soedjatmoko Hall in Surakarta, Central Java.

Titled, High Dreams of a Teacher, the exhibit comprises 60 sketches of women’s faces created with inkstick and watercolor.

Sigit reportedly used a range of models for the portraits, including Veronica Tan, the estranged wife of former Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.

Having worked as an artist for 40 years, Sigit is known for using Chinese painting techniques and for his ability to create an entire sketch with one stroke.

Similar to Chinese paintings, each sketch in the exhibition was meticulously created, displaying strong and neat strokes and delimiting certain details.

However, Sigit also kept some important features, such as the model’s hairstyle, lips and even earrings, resulting in neat yet captivating artworks.

The exhibition also displays Sigit’s past works, which revolve around ships and buildings.

Sigit said that the exhibition was titled High Dreams of a Teacher because he had always wanted to be a teacher and share his knowledge with others.

Sigit added that a work of art needed to be useful and inspire others. He expressed his hopes that the sketch exhibition could inspire the younger generations. (jes/asw)
