Moviegoers are in for a treat.

The Oscars season has just kicked off with the nominations and the ever-fashionable Oscar lunch, and Super Bowl Sunday drops a few trailers of the most anticipated movies and TV series.

Some are part of franchises we all love, one is a TV series and another is just a fraud. As cautionary tales, three movies show the destruction of humanity and the Anthropocene age, either by robots, dinosaurs or nature.

Here's the list of movies to watch in 2018, or any time before humanity becomes extinct:

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Beloved agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is once again tasked with a, well, quite impossible mission and seems to fail. The sixth part of the series, Fallout, seems to be responding to the fatigue many audiences feel toward the series, breathing new life into a franchise that refuses to retire.

Henry Cavill's (Man of Steel, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) appearance is expected to invigorate the movie.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Since the death of Han Solo in The Force Awakens, the character is missed more than ever. Coming on Memorial Day (May 28), Solo is the origin story the galaxy has been waiting for. Alden Ehrenreich carries the heavy burden of portraying a young Han Solo, now just an aspiring pilot making his way with Kira (Emilia Clarke).

The movie is set before the original trilogy, expected to flesh out who Han Solo is before joining the rebellion with Luke and Leia. Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) will also make an appearance.

The Avengers: Infinity War

The Avengers unite, and then some. All superheroes (well, at least those who belong to Marvel) will fight together to finally face the big bad wolf, Thanos. While the first official trailer was out in November last year, Marvel teased us with 30 seconds of promotional footage on Superbowl Sunday.

It does not give us much we don’t already know from the first trailer, just enough to keep us waiting.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

While the previous Jurassic movies assure us that we are safe from dinosaurs so long as we stay off Isla Nublar, the second instalment of the planned trilogy brings the dinosaurs to our bedrooms.

Years after the Jurrasic World movie, life has been quite turbulent for the dinosaurs. A volcanic eruption brings them close to their second extinction, but there is a conspiracy to let loose the dinosaurs to roam the earth. Both Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return to the movie, scheduled to premiere on June 22.

Annihilation

Coming from acclaimed screenwriter and director Alex Garland (Never Let Me Go, Ex Machina), and starring Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac, it is unfortunate that the movie will only be screened in the US, Canada and China, while the rest must settle on Netflix. Lena (Portman) volunteers to enter a mysterious zone called the Shimmer to figure out what is happening to her husband (Isaac), who is gravely sick after coming back from the zone.

The movie is based on a novel with the same title by Jeff VanderMeer, which won the 2014 Nebula Award and the 2014 Shirley Jackson Award as best novel.

Westworld Season 2

The first season's violent end continues. The hosts in robotic amusement park Westworld, led by Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), continue their uprising against the park management and, guessing from the narration in the trailer, humanity in general.

The show's interesting take on humanity has created lots of discussion, let's just hope that the second season will continue to be a mind feast in addition to an obvious visual delight.

Tourism Australia's Dundee Super Bowl Ad 2018

This is a sequel we all need but probably don't deserve. Chris Hemsworth and Danny McBride star in a fake movie sequel ad to The Crocodile Dundee, which turns out to be a video promoting Australian tourism. (kes)
