mlek festivities are far from over in Singkawang, where a lantern parade will light up Wednesday night for Cap Go Meh, which is observed 15 days after Chinese New Year.

Tempo.co reported that Singkawang’s mayor will be present at the event, along with other local government officials and students. There will be nine dragon displays arranged by the Saint Yosep Singkawang Group, which made it into the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) for the highest number of dragon displays for the celebration of Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh.

Singkawang Traffic Police chief Priyanto said there would be no traffic detours while the parade was on. This is due to the large number of parade participants using vehicles, while only marching band members and the bearers of the nine dragons will be on foot.

The parade will start at the mayor’s office and pass along Jl. Firdaus, Jl. Pangeran Diponegoro, Jl. Niaga, Jl. Budi Utomo, Jl. Nusantara, Jl. Jenderal Sudirman, Jl. Kalimantan, Jl. Niaga, Jl. Stasiun and Jl. GM Situt to end at the Happy Building.

After the parade, Jl. Diponegoro en route to Pontianak will be closed to make room for a stage for the Cap Go Meh festival.

Bong Sin Fo from the Saint Yosep Singkawang Group said MURI would issue the record-breaking certificate on Wednesday morning, followed by the eye-opening ritual of the dragons at the Tri Dharma Bumi Raya temple.

“After the ritual, the dragons will be paraded to the temple, close to Jl. GM Situt,” he said. The dragons will also be displayed at the Cap Go Meh festival on Friday. At least 400 people were involved in the making of the dragons. (wen)
