Eateries that are open 24 hours a day in Jakarta are few and far between.

During Ramadhan, such places can be good alternatives for eating sahur (predawn meal). Kompas.com has compiled a list of recommended eateries to have sahur in Jakarta.

1. Warteg Gang Mangga

As a legendary warteg (Tegal food stall) in West Jakarta, Warteg Gang Manga is popular for its extensive range of dishes.

To name a few, there are rendang (meat stewed in coconut milk and spices), orek tempe (tempeh in sweet soy sauce), terong balado (eggplant with sambal), cah kangkung (sautéed Chinese water spinach) and ayam goreng serundeng (fried chicken with shredded coconut).

Open 24 hours a day, Warteg Gang Mangga is like a second home for its loyal customers. Visit them at Jl. Kemurnian V No. 1D, West Jakarta.

2. Nasi Kapau Kramat Raya

Nasi kapau is a less oily version of nasi Padang with a larger portion of vegetables. The perfect place to give it a try is at Jl. Kramat Raya, Senen, Central Jakarta.

Rows and rows of nasi kapau sellers and their mouth-watering dishes have been there since the 1970s. In the 1980s, the Jakarta administration designated the area a culinary destination.

Although it is not a 24-hour area, most stalls are open from 2 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Consider going here for an adventurous choice for sahur.

3. Warteg Warmo

At Jl. Tebet Timur Raya No. 1D sits the legendary Warteg Warmo. Open since 1970 for 24 hours a day, this particular warteg is also known for its diverse menu of side dishes. Its trademark is the lengthy glass case, made to accommodate the huge selection of food.

Warteg Warmo is probably even more famous because of its clientele , ranging from dangdut singer Rhoma Irama, fashion designer Ivan Gunawan, rock band Seringai and even President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who once stopped by during his presidential campaign.

4. Bubur Kwang Tung

With Cantonese porridge as their trademark, Kwang Tung, which operates 24 hours a day, also serves Chinese-style side dishes. All the food here is halal.

The porridge comes with your choice of meat, such as chicken, beef, crab, prawn, scallop, grouper fish or century-old egg. Be aware that the porridge comes in a large portion and could be shared with two to three people. Visit them at Jl. Pecenongan No. 67I, Pecenongan, Central Jakarta, or the branch at Jl. Wolter Monginsidi No. 49, Senopati, South Jakarta.

5. Eatsomnia

Open 24 hours a day, Eatsomnia is located at Jl. Fatmawati No. 3C, South Jakarta, with another branch at Jl. Bintaro Utama 3, Blok AP No. 59, Bintaro, South Tangerang.

Specializing in wagyu beef at affordable prices, its popular dishes are wagyu beef and rice with a variety of chili or sauces, such as sambal hijau (green chili sauce), rica rica (spicy sauce), tongseng (yellow coconut sauce), semur (sweet sauce) and rendang (herb and spice sauce). (wng)
