ndonesian singer-songwriter Sherina Munaf first caught people’s attention through her role as Sherina in the 2000 children’s movie Petualangan Sherina (Sherina’s Adventure).

Around 18 years later, the crooner of “Cinta Pertama dan Terakhir” (First and Last Love) returned to the big screen in action film Wiro Sableng as the purple-dressed warrior Anggini.

At a press conference on the release of the movie’s trailer, Sherina described the pressure she felt during the filming. “It’s been a long time since I acted in a film, so I faced a new environment [and] a different industry compared to music – there was pressure about whether or not I could perform [in front of the camera],” said Sherina on May 11 at the Plaza Indonesia mall in Central Jakarta.

Sherina overcame that pressure with months of training prior to the shooting. “We had choreography training and an acting class with ‘Mas’ Yayu [Unru] at the same time. We were given the freedom to interpret the characters, to discuss and build chemistry with other actors,” she explained. “There will always be some pressure, and we will always struggle with ourselves. At the end of the day, we just need to get on with it.”

Moreover, the former coach of television singing competition The Voice Indonesia praised the crew and actors for a warm, supportive environment. “They were very cool […]. I felt confident with myself because of them,” Sherina said, adding that she and the other cast continued to train physically during the shooting.

Known as the protégé of Dewa Tuak (Andy /rif), Anggini has a silk shawl and silver nails as her weapons. It was challenging for Sherina, as she could not imagine what the shawl would look like, though she did train using a shawl before the actual filming.

“But it could not extend the way it would in Wiro Sableng’s universe. It could not be trained. The art department and the costume team collaborated to make the shawl in the movie, and later it was tweaked with CGI (computer-generated imagery),” said Sherina. “On the first day of shooting, I still didn’t really know about the mechanism of the shawl […]. It’s difficult. I mean, if I had been trained with a sword or machete, I could imagine what it would look like. But when it comes to a shawl, it has a different movement and weight. […] It’s more like a dance, and it’s really good.”

During an interview uploaded to the movie’s Instagram account, Sherina mentioned similarities between Anggini and herself. “I can relate to Anggini when I’m obsessed with something. I’ll be really into that one thing until sometimes I forget other things,” Sherina said. “She is also a perfectionist.”
