acebook seems to be riding the wave of World Cup-fever, according to an exclusive report by Variety, as the social media giant is in discussions with global soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo regarding a reality show of his very own.

Multiple sources have said that Facebook is in talks with partners to air the proposed docu-series through Facebook Watch, a platform for TV-style content, putting them in the running against streaming services like Hulu and Netflix.

The show could run Facebook quite a bit of money, as the Portuguese soccer player could get a pay check of around US$10 million for the 13-episode show, sources say.

While sources differed in their accounts on how far along the series is, Variety reported that it was to be packaged by CAA and would be produced by Matador Content and Religion of Sports, a sports-media firm founded by Gotham Chopra, Michael Strahan, Tom Brady and production company Dirty Robber.

Facebook is no stranger to Ronaldo or sports content, as the network ordered a scripted series from wiip, Ronaldo’s newly launched studio, about a high-school girls’ soccer team in upstate New York that “inspires the local community to transcend racial, ethnic and class differences dividing it.”

Facebook Watch has also funded and hosted multiple sport reality shows, including Tom vs. Time, which follows New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and his life during his 18th NFL season. Tom vs. Time has been viewed nearly 52 million times to date and is reportedly what Ronaldo’s show would be inspired by. (sul/kes)
