“I am so impressed with myself,” Winfrey confessed, before laughing out loud. “This is what I didn’t know: that I was the first African-American self-made billionaire. Did not know that.”

She added that she had not realized she had “donated more to charity in the 20th century than any other African-American.”

Winfrey’s past is filled with firsts, as she was one of the first black female news anchors, at the age of 19.

This year, with an estimated net worth of US$4.03 billion, she became the first black woman to win the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes, as well as the first black female entrepreneur included on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index of the World’s Richest People.

Many have been clamoring for Winfrey to run for president of the United States in 2020, but she told British Vogue that she didn’t think the position would be for her.

“In that political structure – all the non-truths, the bulls---, the crap, the nastiness, the backhanded backroom stuff that goes on – I feel like I could not exist,” Winfrey said. “I would not be able to do it. It's not a clean business. It would kill me." (sul/kes)
