ndonesian-made video game DreadOut is set to be adapted to film. A survival horror game, DreadOut tells the story of Indonesian high school students who stray into an old abandoned town.

As ghosts and paranormal activities confront the stray students, the game takes players on an adventure to uncover the secrets of the town and its surrounding area.

Tempo.co reported that the plan to film DreadOut was announced on Saturday, July 14, at the Game Prime event organized by The Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf), and that director and producer Kimo Stamboel is set to take the role as director, screenwriter and producer of the movie adaptation. Other producers appointed to the film include Wida Handoyo and Edwin Nazir.

In response to the announcement, Kimo stated that he had long seen the potential of the video game.

“When I first tried to play the game, at that moment I knew it had the potential to be adapted to the big screen,” Kimo said. Previously, Kimo directed the horror-slasher Rumah Dara, psychological thriller Killers and the extreme action-packed Headshot.

Head of Bekraf Triawan Munaf expressed hope the collaboration between the video game and film industries would encourage other creative industry players to pursue more joint projects.

He went on to say that such collaborations could boost the growth of the creative sector's contribution to gross domestic income.

DreadOut, a video game developed by Digital Happiness, a company founded by Rachmad Imron, received crowd funding from an international audience. Rahman told Tempo.co that he purposely developed the video game so that it could be expanded into an entertainment franchise. (anm/mut)
