Art sculpture exhibition Trilumin Luminarium in Mal Taman Anggrek promises an experience of being immersed in radiant light and color.
rt sculpture Trilumin Luminarium by Architects of Air from the United Kingdom is currently being exhibited in Mal Taman Anggrek, West Jakarta. The sculpture promises an experience of being immersed in radiant light and color.
The installation was inspired by the geometrical designs of nature along with Islamic architecture. Inside, you can find winding passages of small domes illuminated by the dominant colors of red, blue and green. There are three sculptures resembling trees, a main dome and a slightly smaller dome that depicts the sky. Red and blue pods are scattered inside for visitors to unwind and relax.
The luminosity of light and color inside Trilumin is created by the light shining through colored plastic. All individual pieces were cut and glued together by hand in a workshop based in Nottingham, England.
Exhibition manager Gabriel Burden said the luminarium was designed by Alan Parkinson from Architects of Air 25 years ago. It has held exhibitions in over 40 countries since 1992, including Canada, Australia, Norway and Japan. “Every year he builds a new one, so over the years he’s built 25. Currently we have five [sculptures] that are circulating and each is themed differently,” he said to The Jakarta Post at Mal Taman Anggrek on Friday.
Other than the subtle hues that are slightly ever-changing and unexpected, the most attractive thing is the main dome, which features an Islamic architecture-style dome with stained glass windows often found in Catholic cathedrals. Ambient music is played throughout the exhibition.
“People get very relaxed inside,” said Burden. “Sometimes we got very beautiful experiences as well. For example, children who are autistic, they can really connect with the lights and they just look at the colors. Something like that can be very special.”
Entry tickets to Trilumin are priced at Rp 60,000 (US$4) each, valid for 30 minutes. Tickets are also available via Go-Pay and Tokopedia, with a special price of Rp 50,000. The exhibition will run until Sept. 30 and is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Visitors are required to take off their shoes and wear socks inside the sculpture. They are encouraged to take their time, walk slowly and absorb the ambience. The luminarium is also accessible for wheelchair users. (wng)
