ndonesian publisher Gramedia Pustaka Utama launched two books at the 2018 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival (UWRF) in Ubud, Bali, on Thursday.

They are the English version of Nayla by Indonesian author Djenar Maesa Ayu and a silent comic, Gugug! by illustrator Mohammad “Emte” Taufiq.

Nayla, Djenar’s debut novel that was originally published in 2005, explores distorted love in human relationships, including between men and women and mother and child. It was translated into English by Sebastian Partogi.

Meanwhile, Gugug! follows a dog’s adventure in a city. The comic features no dialogue and, instead, Emte presents the story through illustrations, showing marginalized people and exploring their place in the hierarchy of urban life, from the slums to street communities.

Gramedia Pustaka Utama public relations staff member Dionisius Wisnu said in a statement that the company felt honored to take part in this year’s UWRF.

He expressed hope that the two books would be appreciated by international readers. (jes/wng)
