ans of Chuck Lorre's works (Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory) may want to check out his new half-hour Netflix comedy, The Kominsky Method, which focuses on the friendship between acting teacher Sandy Kominsky (played by Michael Douglas) and his agent Norman Newlander (Alan Arkin).

“Part of the joy of this is, the friendship of the two supports them through trials and tribulations of what they’re going through with family and money and health and loss," Lorre reportedly said.

Already dubbed a “geezer comedy” and "tragicomedy" by USA Today, the work marks a departure from Lorre’s usual upbeat comedies and will offer a more melancholic take on aging.

Troubles, such as losing a spouse, wayward children, lost dreams and failing health, are some of the subjects the show, which already premiered on the streaming service, touches on.

A trailer for the series is already available on Netflix’s YouTube channel.

The trailer reads, “When it comes to family, you’ve got to know when to hold them, know when to walk away, and know when to run” between clips of the two main characters sharing banter, depicted in situations that will later be explored in the show.

What is known so far about the show is that the character of Sandy Kominsky is “an extremely successful acting teacher, but the other parts of his life are not quite as successful”.

“It’s a strange profession. I’ve gotten to see extraordinary actors and appreciate what they do, especially in front of an audience. I wanted to pay homage to the craft,” Lorre said.

Lorre added that the reasons he picked Douglas for the role were, “a combination of his ability to do comedy, as well as the gravitas of the role. And there’s a dynamic between him and Alan that’s quite wonderful. One of those paradigm relationships between two men.”

Co-starring alongside Douglas and Arkin is Nancy Travis, who plays a love-interest for Kominsky, Ann-Margret who plays a widow with an interest in Newlander, and others, such as Jay Leno, Elliot Gould, Patti LaBelle and Danny DeVito, who stars as Sandy’s urologist. (acr/kes)
