rofessional social networking site LinkedIn, which was designed to allow professionals to link with their counterparts to further business connections, is now testing a Snapchat-inspired feature, called “Student Voices”, that is currently available to college students in the United States.

LinkedIn product manager Isha Patel told TechCrunch: “As we know, students love to use video to capture moments so we’ve created this new product to help them connect with one another around shared experiences on campus to help create a sense of community.”

College students were given the opportunity to share short videos over the platform, featuring their academic experiences, including achievements, competitions, exhibitions and other merits. A video showcasing the capability of the new feature has already been posted.

“Student Voices” would be made available on the LinkedIn home screen and allows students to add videos to their Campus Playlist, but no photos are allowed. The videos will disappear from the playlist after 1 week, but are permanently visible on a user’s LinkedIn profile, under the “Recent Activity” tab in the menu, according to TechCrunch.

“It’s a great way for students to build out their profile and have this authentic content that shows who they are and what their academic and professional experiences have been.” Patel was quoted as saying.

TechCrunch notes that in comparison to Snapchat, LinkedIn’s Student Voices keeps videos uploaded, instead of erasing them permanently for the sake of privacy and protecting a user’s reputation, which is the concept Snapchat’s Stories function was designed for.

“Having these videos live on their [LinkedIn] profile can help students grow their network, prepare for life after graduation and help potential employers learn more about them,” said Patel. (acr/mut)
