The singer from Surakarta in Central Java is best known for campursari (a genre blending traditional Javanese and modern music). In recent months, he gained mainstream popularity as Lord Didi, the Godfather of Broken Hearts, due to his lovelorn lyrics sung in Javanese. He is especially popular with young people, who call themselves “sad boys” and “sad girls”.

Shopee’s collaboration with Didi will begin with the Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale TV Show, to be aired on RCTI, SCTV, Indosiar and MNC TV on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.

Shopee Indonesia director Handhika Jahja said the platform considered Didi an iconic figure who had dedicated his life to popularizing the country’s authentic music.

“Indonesian culture needs to be passed on from generation to generation. Our collaboration with Didi Kempot aims to amplify the richness of Indonesian culture through a series of initiatives,” he said in a statement.

Didi concurred: “Collaborating with an online shopping platform is a new experience for me. Hopefully, we can bring the country’s culture closer to the public and create positive influences to support its conservation.”

The Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale TV Show will feature Didi, Agnez Mo, Rossa and Via Vallen, along with a surprise event involving K-pop group GFRIEND. (wng)
