Tobacco farmers in Manisrenggo district, Klaten regency, have high hopes for this years harvest. They had suffered financial losses due to crop failure in the past two years.
As the intensity of the rain eased this year, the farmers were happy with the higher price of tobacco. Grade B tobacco was priced at Rp 40,000 (US$3) per kilogram, whereas last year’s price was only Rp 25,000/kg.
The Manisrenggo district is a high-quality tobacco production center. Cigarette companies buy tobacco from the farmers in the district. A total of 600 hectares is allocated for tobacco from a total of 1,509 hectare plot of land in the area. The rest is reserved for paddy fields. The farmers plant the Bligon and Rejeb types of tobacco.
Most of the workers are female and they usually do not own the land. They work for Rp 30,000 per day. [yan]
