As Jakarta revels in its 484th anniversary in a month-long celebration, Jakartans can witness the presence of Ondel-Ondel in most corners of the city. Laden with cultural symbolism and values, Ondel-Ondel was once used to protect the Betawi people from bad luck. Now, they are used to spice up the festivities and for some, bring back the romance of the great old days of Batavia, the previous name of Jakarta (JP/Jerry Adiguna).
