The Medan District Court convicted and sentenced Tuesday five people for their involvement in a riot that led to the death of the North Sumatra's Provincial Legislative Council speaker Abdul Aziz Angkat.
In separate trials, judges sentenced Gelmok Samosir, Masrul Parulian Simbolon and Robert Hutagalung to six, two and one-and-a-half years in jail respectively.
The court also sentenced Vinci Hutagaol and Toni Pangaribuan to two-and-a-half years each.
Gelmok, Masrul, Vinci and Toni have already filed an appeal, while Robert said he would consider doing so.
The judges said all the defendants had been proven guilty of disrupting the council’s plenary session prior to the riot.
Judge Sutadi said Gelmok had coordinated masses to destroy facilities at the council building during a rally to call for the creation of a new province of Tapanuli.
