Police to work with prosecutors

JAKARTA: The Attorney General's Office will appoint a prosecutor to help the police draw up indictments on high-profile cases to make sure the case files are done correctly from the beginning of the process.

""We don't want to repeat our failures to convince the prosecutors in the case of a bank fraud involving Adrian Waworuntu,"" said National Police Chief of Detectives Comr. Gen. Suyitno Landung Sudjono.

The Jakarta Prosecutor's Office rejected the case file seven times before it declared the file complete. But the suspect managed to flee the country as the police were about to transfer him to the prosecutor's detention facility, partly due to the lengthy process involved.

Adrian is one of the key suspects in the Rp 1.7 trillion BNI (US$185 million) scandal. He recently turned himself in and will go on trial shortly. -- JP
