Sutanto shakes up police force

JAKARTA: National Police operations division chief Insp. Gen. Didi Widiyadi was appointed on Friday as the new head of the force's general supervision division, replacing Comr. Gen. Binarto.

Binarto had resigned from his post last month after being required to face a police disciplinary hearing over alleged involvement in fuel smuggling in Surabaya, East Java.

Didi, meanwhile, will be replaced by Insp. Gen. Adang Firman, an expert advisor to National Police chief Gen. Sutanto.

""This promotion will hopefully bring improvements to the police,"" Sutanto told those attending the inauguration ceremony.

However, he did not give any reasons for his decision to allow Binarto to resign, which could allow Binarto to escape facing the disciplinary committee. -- JP
