JAKARTA: Managers of the Community Radio Network demanded Friday that the government scrap a 2005 government regulation that they say threatens their livelihoods.
The regulation, which limits community stations' broadcasting areas to a 2.5 kilometer radius, would make it impossible for community radio to operate, they told the House of Representatives on Friday.
The Indonesian Community Radio Network groups 680 stations and their number is growing, network chairman Surowo Haryono said.
Community radio stations were playing an important role in the development of rural and remote communities and had worked to promote peace in conflict areas, he said.
""The regulation was made without considering geographical, sociological and topographical aspects,"" Surowo said. -- JP
