JAKARTA: As part of its efforts to contain bird flu, the North Jakarta administration on Friday took blood from 20 farmers in Matraman, Utan Kayu Selatan, East Jakarta.

""We are testing their blood because Matraman is a high-risk area for avian flu,"" Widiastuti, a city health agency official said Friday.

A number of chickens in the area have been found dead.

Tempointeraktif reported that the farmers responded positively to the drive as they offered to have the test.

Matraman market sells poultry from other areas like Bogor, Bekasi, Tasikmalaya, Bandung and Surakarta.

On Thursday, Jakarta Deputy Governor Fauzi Bowo announced that, in its three-day door-to-door inspection, the city's bird flu team found 37 sick pet birds and chickens.

Infected birds were found in 12 subdistricts.

All birds and chickens in those subdistricts have been vaccinated.

""To maximize preventative measures, our team will also be deployed to inspect poultry farms, slaughterhouses and markets. We're working 24/7, so we won't miss a thing,"" he said. --JP
